St Brigid's Catholic Church in Midland, Western Australia, has a rich history that reflects the growth and development of the local Catholic community. The Sisters of Mercy established the church group in 1902, marking the beginning of Catholic education and worship in the area. The original church, constructed in 1902, was a simple Federation Free Style building. In 1906, a two-storey Federation Free Style convent was added, followed by a school in 1919. These structures served the community for several decades.
In 1967, the current church was built alongside the original church, which was then converted into classrooms and later served as the parish hall. The new church was designed in a double volume Twentieth Century Ecclesiastical Style by architectural firm, Oldham, Boas and Ednie-Brown and officially opened and consecrated on December 14, 1969, by The Most Reverend Sir Launcelot Goody.
The church group is significant as one of the longest-operating Sisters of Mercy establishments in the state. The development of St Brigid’s Catholic Church Group illustrates the growth in importance and population of the town of Midland from the early twentieth century.
Today, St Brigid's Catholic Church continues to serve as a place of worship and community for the people of Midland, maintaining its historical legacy while adapting to the needs of the modern congregation.
James Sweeney who was an alter server at consecration mass on December 14, 1969 took some photographs on his Kodak Instamatic camera on Saturday June 21, 1969 of the new St Brigid’s Catholic Church under construction which are below.
